Disney's Contemporary Resort

Disney’s Contemporary Resort, one of the original Walt Disney World hotels, opened in 1971 and remains one of the most iconic symbols of Disney innovation. Designed to reflect the idea of “contemporary living,” this resort’s sleek architecture, clean lines, and futuristic flair embodied Walt Disney’s forward-thinking vision of the future.

The most striking feature of the Contemporary is its A-frame tower, built in collaboration with the United States Steel Corporation. What made it groundbreaking for its time was the modular construction technique — entire guest rooms were built offsite, fully furnished, and then slid into place within the steel frame like drawers. This cutting-edge design was an architectural marvel in the early 1970s and continues to impress guests to this day.

Of course, no feature is more iconic than the monorail gliding straight through the heart of the resort. Guests can board the monorail right from inside the hotel’s Grand Canyon Concourse, home to dining, shops, and the legendary Mary Blair mural — a stunning piece of art that ties the space together with vibrant color and charm. The integration of the monorail into the building’s design perfectly captured the Disney promise of blending imagination, technology, and everyday comfort.

When the resort first opened, it was a bold symbol of Walt Disney’s dream for the future — a vision that extended beyond theme parks and into modern living. And while that futuristic city of tomorrow never came to life exactly as he imagined, the Contemporary Resort remains a powerful reflection of that dream.

Over the decades, the resort has evolved while staying true to its roots. Today, it features refreshed rooms with sleek, modern touches and a contemporary twist inspired by The Incredibles. The addition of Bay Lake Tower brought even more luxurious accommodations while keeping the same incredible views of Magic Kingdom and Bay Lake that have enchanted guests for generations.

From its monorail gliding through the atrium to the soft glow of fireworks over Cinderella Castle, Disney’s Contemporary Resort continues to represent innovation, nostalgia, and the timeless magic that only Disney can create.

Dining

Dining at Disney’s Contemporary Resort is a culinary adventure that perfectly complements the resort’s modern, sophisticated style. Whether you’re looking for fine dining with panoramic views, a quick bite between park visits, or a relaxing drink with a view of Bay Lake, this resort has something for every taste and occasion.

California Grill (Table Service)

Perched high atop the resort, California Grill offers one of the most sought-after dining experiences at Walt Disney World. Guests can savor a menu inspired by fresh, seasonal ingredients from California’s coast — from sushi rolls and oak-fired steaks to handcrafted desserts.

As the evening unfolds, step out onto the observation deck for a breathtaking view of Magic Kingdom’s fireworks, complete with the music perfectly synchronized. The combination of world-class cuisine, an impressive wine list, and unbeatable views makes California Grill an unforgettable experience for special celebrations.

Chef Mickey's (Table Service)

No visit to the Contemporary is complete without a stop at Chef Mickey’s, located in the heart of the resort’s atrium. This lively, all-you-care-to-enjoy buffet features Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Donald, and Pluto — all dressed in their chef attire and ready for photos and fun.

Serving breakfast and dinner, Chef Mickey’s is a favorite for families looking to start or end their day with classic Disney magic (and those famous Mickey waffles, of course!).

Steakhouse 71 (Table Service)

Located on the first floor, Steakhouse 71 is a contemporary take on a classic American steakhouse — named in honor of Walt Disney World’s opening year, 1971.

Here, you’ll find hearty breakfast favorites like Floridian Eggs Benedict and Seasonal Pancakes, while lunch and dinner menus feature filet mignon, prime rib, and the fan-favorite Steakhouse 71 Burger. With retro-modern décor and subtle nods to Disney’s early days, it’s the perfect balance of nostalgia and sophistication.

Contempo Cafe (Quick Service)

For something quick and convenient, Contempo Café offers a casual dining experience right inside the resort’s Grand Canyon Concourse — where the monorail glides by overhead.

Enjoy a variety of grab-and-go or made-to-order options, including flatbreads, sandwiches, and pastries. Breakfast brings Mickey-shaped waffles and freshly brewed coffee, making it a great stop before heading to Magic Kingdom.

Contemporary Grounds (Coffee Bar)

Start your morning the right way at Contemporary Grounds, located just off the resort’s main lobby. This cozy coffee bar serves up freshly brewed Joffrey’s Coffee, espresso drinks, smoothies, and hot chocolate — perfect for that early park wake-up or an afternoon pick-me-up. You’ll also find a tempting selection of house-made pastries, muffins, and specialty treats to enjoy on the go.

It’s the ideal stop for a quick caffeine fix before catching the monorail or relaxing in the lobby while the monorail glides overhead.

Outer Rim (Lounge)

Overlooking Bay Lake, the Outer Rim Lounge is the perfect place to relax with a drink after a day in the parks. The laid-back atmosphere, floor-to-ceiling windows, and creative cocktails make it an ideal spot for unwinding while watching the sunset reflect off the water.

The Sand Bar (Pool Bar)

Located by the resort’s feature pool overlooking Bay Lake, The Sand Bar is perfect for guests who want to relax and refuel without stepping too far from the water. You’ll find a variety of casual favorites like burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, and salads, along with snacks, soft drinks, and frozen treats for the kids.

Adults can enjoy specialty cocktails, wine, or draft beer while lounging poolside. With shaded tables and stunning lake views, The Sand Bar is the perfect spot for an easy lunch, an afternoon drink, or a well-deserved break from the parks.

Activities

At Disney’s Contemporary Resort, there’s more to enjoy than just the incredible monorail views and sleek design. Whether you’re soaking up the sun by the pool, setting sail on Bay Lake, or watching fireworks over Cinderella Castle, this resort combines Disney fun with modern luxury.

Pools

The resort’s main feature pool, located along Bay Lake, offers something for everyone. Families love the waterslide, splash area for little ones, and relaxing whirlpool spas. The nearby Sand Bar serves casual bites and tropical drinks, making it easy to refuel without leaving your lounge chair.

For a quieter experience, the Bay Lake Pool—a leisure pool surrounded by palm trees—provides the perfect retreat for reading, relaxing, or enjoying the peaceful lakeside breeze.

Marina & Water Recreation

Head to the Marina for a day of fun on the water. Guests can rent motorized boats to explore Bay Lake, enjoy guided fishing excursions, or simply take in the scenery from the dock. The gentle waves and distant castle views make this one of the most relaxing spots on property.

Lakeside Activities & Fireworks Views

In the evenings, the resort’s lakeside promenade becomes the perfect place to unwind. You can watch Magic Kingdom’s fireworks reflect across the water or catch the Electrical Water Pageant—a beloved Disney tradition of twinkling lights and music that sails by nightly.

Fitness & Sports

Stay active with a visit to the resort’s fitness center, located in the Contemporary Tower, or go for a jog along the scenic trail connecting the Contemporary and Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort. There’s also a volleyball court near the marina for a little friendly competition with family or friends.

Arcade & Kids’ Activities

Inside the resort, the Game Station Arcade offers hours of entertainment for kids and teens, featuring classic and modern video games. Younger guests can also enjoy poolside games, crafts, and trivia hosted by recreation cast members throughout the week.

Shopping

hopping at Disney’s Contemporary Resort perfectly complements the resort’s modern, stylish vibe. Whether you’re searching for the latest Disney souvenirs, a must-have collectible, or a few vacation essentials, you’ll find plenty of options just steps away from the Grand Canyon Concourse.

Bay View Gifts (BVG)

Located on the fourth floor of the resort’s atrium, Bay View Gifts — affectionately known as BVG — is your one-stop shop for Disney apparel, jewelry, home décor, and resort-branded merchandise. You’ll also find an assortment of snacks, packaged treats, and gifts perfect for bringing a little Disney magic home.

Fantasia Market

For quick snacks and on-the-go essentials, stop by Fantasia Market. This convenient shop carries grab-and-go food items, beverages, and basic groceries — ideal for guests staying in Bay Lake Tower villas or anyone who wants to keep their room stocked with easy breakfast items and late-night bites.

Fantasia Shop

Right next door, Fantasia Shop is a toy-lover’s dream. Kids will adore browsing shelves of plush characters, games, and Disney toys, while collectors will find pins, MagicBands, and other Disney favorites. It’s also a fun stop before heading into Magic Kingdom — you can even spot the monorail gliding overhead while you shop.

WYWT Tip:
Visit the shops on the fourth floor in the early evening when the monorail lights up and the atrium buzzes with energy — it’s the perfect time to browse, grab a treat, and feel the heart of the Contemporary’s timeless magic.

Transportation

Transportation is one of the biggest perks of staying at Disney’s Contemporary Resort. With multiple ways to reach the parks and nearby destinations, getting around Walt Disney World is as easy as it is magical.

Guests can choose from three main Disney transportation options:

  • Monorail – Board the Resort Monorail right from the fourth floor of the hotel’s Grand Canyon Concourse for quick access to Magic Kingdom. You can also transfer at the Transportation & Ticket Center (TTC) for service to EPCOT.

  • Ferryboat – A relaxing water launch travels across Bay Lake and Seven Seas Lagoon, connecting guests to Disney’s Wilderness Lodge and Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground.

  • Motorcoach Bus – Complimentary Disney buses provide transportation to Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Disney Springs, and both Disney Water Parks.

Because the Contemporary is the closest resort to Magic Kingdom, many guests choose to walk along the short, scenic pathway — it’s only about a 10-minute stroll and a wonderful way to skip the post-fireworks crowds.

Please allow for up to a 20-minute wait for Disney transportation in addition to walking time to your resort or theme park stop.

Average Travel Times from Disney’s Contemporary Resort

  • Magic Kingdom: 10 minutes by foot | 5 minutes by monorail

  • EPCOT: 25–30 minutes by monorail (transfer at TTC) | 20 minutes by car

  • Disney’s Hollywood Studios: 20 minutes by bus | 17 minutes by car

  • Disney’s Animal Kingdom: 22 minutes by bus | 18 minutes by car

  • Disney Springs: 23 minutes by bus | 18 minutes by car

WYWT Insider Tip:
Bus transportation from the Contemporary Resort is occasionally shared with Disney’s Wilderness Lodge, so travel times may vary slightly depending on time of day and route order. For early breakfast reservations or when you want a direct route, consider using a Minnie Van via the Lyft app for quick, private service.

And don’t forget — the walking path to Magic Kingdom is one of the easiest and most peaceful ways to get to the park, especially first thing in the morning or after the fireworks.

Who This Resort Is Best For?

Disney’s Contemporary Resort is a dream for guests who love the perfect balance of convenience, modern comfort, and Disney nostalgia. It’s ideal for families who want to be as close as possible to Magic Kingdom, couples who enjoy sleek sophistication, and anyone who appreciates a touch of Disney history paired with incredible views.

With two distinct sections, the Contemporary Tower and Bay Lake Tower, this resort offers something for every travel style. There are separate check-ins for each, and while Bay Lake Tower guests may enjoy both pools, those staying in the Contemporary Tower do not have access to Bay Lake Tower’s pool. It’s a helpful detail to keep in mind when planning your stay.

Inside, the resort blends Disney nostalgia with an updated, modern edge. Whether you’re watching the monorail glide through the Grand Canyon Concourse, sipping wine at California Grill, or relaxing on your balcony overlooking Bay Lake, every experience feels timeless and distinctly Disney.

WYWT Favorites & Insider Tips:

  • Rooms overlooking Bay Lake offer peaceful sunrise views and a calm start to your day.

  • About 70% of California Grill’s wine collection comes from California vineyards, and the restaurant’s observation deck is one of my favorite places to watch Magic Kingdom’s fireworks without committing to a full dinner. There is also a verandah off the Grand Canyon Concourse that offers a lovely view.

  • The chocolate layer cake at Steakhouse 71 is unforgettable. If you are dining later in the evening, order it at the beginning of your meal as it sometimes sells out.

  • The main Contemporary Pool is open to all guests, but the Bay Lake Tower pool is exclusive to those staying there.

This resort is best suited for:

  • Families who want quick access to Magic Kingdom and EPCOT via the monorail

  • Guests who enjoy a walkable resort experience with a modern aesthetic

  • Couples or friends who appreciate elevated dining and beautiful water or fireworks views

  • Travelers who love Disney nostalgia but prefer clean, contemporary design

With its unbeatable location, mid-century charm, and incredible dining lineup, Disney’s Contemporary Resort continues to capture the innovative spirit of Walt Disney’s vision, making it a classic that never goes out of style.
